Long hair don't care

It is true. I am a hair stylist and I have long hair... WHHHAT?? yeah I know. I have tried short hair and it just isn't me. I have chopped and grown my hair out lots of times. Everyone always asks what my"secrets" are. Well now I will share.

Product

I always tell my clients, product, is the only secret weapon hair dressers have. Having professional product is so so SO important to keep you hair in good condition. Long hair takes a beating. Between thermal tools, sun, wind, minerals in the water, hair color and just everyday normal stress it goes through. To all of my clients that are wanting to grow their hair out I recommend a strength and or moisture shampoo. Your hair needs keratin and other natural proteins to keep it strong. I personally love the Lanza' line its what I use in my hair everyday.

Biotin

Taking biotin helps jump start my hair growth. I take one every morning after breakfast. Make sure you take it with food and listen to your body. Some people may want to start taking a 1/2 of one everyday. I usually start noticing a difference in 3 months after taking it. MAKE SURE you take it everyday if you really want to notice a difference.

Split Ends Saga

Split ends ruin hair from the bottom up. There is no magical product that will mend a split end and I repeat nothing mends split ends. The only was to get rid of split ends is to TRIM them off.  For people wanting to grow their hair i usually recommend a TRIM every 10-13 weeks to keep hair healthy(every hair type is different that's just a guideline). When you go to get a TRIM ask the cosmetologist to show you how much they are planning to trim before they make the first cut to make sure you both are on the same page.

Turn the Heat Down

Did you know most thermal styling tools get 400 degrees.... that what most cookies cook at!!!! If you use any kind of heat tool aka, blow dryer, flat iron, curling iron or anything else you need to make sure to have a styling aid/heat protector  Please use the right thermal protector for you hair to keep your hair from burning off.  Most peoples hair do not need 400 degree tools to style their hair. If you can, turn the temperature down on the tools. You will be surprised how well it works.

Air Dry

To be totally honest here I let my hair air dry 90% of the time. If I'm in the salon or in a rush I can't really get around it, that's where good thermal aids come into play. But if I have time I will let my natural texture take over when I want to wear it curled or if I know I will want it straight I will brush it every 30 minuets or so.

  2. I have wispy poker straight hair and have been unable to grow the sides. Reading your blog made me realize all my mistakes and I could cry, since it takes soooo long to grow. If I don't use hair spray, it's flatsville. Got any advice?

    1. Try putting an oil or serum on your hair before you spray it with hair spray that should help your hair from drying out. Have you ever tried powdered up by lanza? I love it for back combing and to add volume, A little goes a really really long way!! Also use a leave in conditioner on the ends of your hair to keep it from breaking. Hope this helps!!

  3. I am working so hard at growing my hair out. It is damaged though from all the past coloring I use to do. Boo! I feel like my hair is broke off and makes it uneven and I tend to have fly aways. Should I cut my hair off to even it up, or continue to let it grow out? I know that is a silly question, but I hate to start from scratch. I also don't want to be the girl walking around with fried looking hair!

    1. So nikki, what i would do is first color your hair to a color you will be happy having it for a while, I usually suggest a dark blond to brown. Then its kinda hard for me to tell you how much you sould cut off just because i have never seen your hair, but a good place to start is just cutting a half inch off every 10-12 weeks. Make sure you are using thermal protector and when you can dont use heat at all. hope this helps!!

  4. Lots of great advice! I too take Biotin when I want a kick start! What is your advice on frequency when washing your hair? As much as I would love to give my hair a break from washing it all the time I try and work out most days and I feel like my hair is too dirty not to wash it.

    1. Amanda, I always tell people wash your hair least as possible. Washing it less will let the natural oils in your hair nourish your hair. It will help it become less dry. If you have colored hair it will help the color last longer too!

I work out quite often my self. My saving grace is dry shampoo. Have you ever tried it before? I highly recommend it!

I have also noticed with me and my families hair the less I wash my hair the less oily it gets over time. So it may be pretty oily the first few times you try but it should get better over time. Try doing top knots so you wont notice. Hope this helps! Thanks for commenting!
